1. Overview

Species constantly evolves to avoid extinction. An unfriendly environment facilitates evolution. This project was created amidst the pandemic, during a series of gloomy days which sarcastically incited desire to produce artworks.

Butterfly evolved from a caterpillar, a new form representing hope and passion. Its unique, invisible appearance, obviously evolved from the hard times when we sometimes question existence, could only become visible with flapping wings when the audience comes close. It’s been too long!

The reflective material reminds the audience of what happened to the Butterflies happened to each of us.

2. Design Process

Tasks:
  • Design a set of mechanism to control the speed of simulated butterfly wing flapping by sensing human motion.
  • Design butterfly control mechanism using 3D printing and Blender.
  • Control butterfly wing flapping speed by recognizing the distance between human body and butterfly by adopting the framework of Controller-Sensor-Electric Machinery.

When people approach, butterfly wings flap to speed up.
